Correction: Saturday November 29th 2008 is Buy Nothing Day in UK

http://www.buynothingday.co.uk

Saturday November 29th 2008 is Buy Nothing Day, It's a day where you challenge yourself to switch off from shopping and tune into life.

simple, for 24 hours you will detox from consumerism and live without shopping. Anyone can take part provided they spend a day without spending!

Buy Nothing Day is the biggest 24-hour moratorium against consumerism. People around the world will make a pact to take a break from shopping as a personal experiment or public statement and the best thing is - IT'S FREE!!!

Your event can be anything from staying at home with a good book to organising a free concert. If this is your first time its best to set your sights on something easy. Ask friends to help - groups spring up just for Buy Nothing Day, so keep checking the BND Blog.

Planning
Planning your event is key to its success. Hold a few meetings with friends before the day. Ask friends to take on responsibilities i.e. making posters leaflets and banners - costumes (if needed) and get someone to deal with the publicity and press etc. Let the press and local radio know what you are doing - customise the BND PRESS RELEASE to suite your event.

Important
Make sure your event can take place at your chosen location and isn’t on private property - its pointless working hard at organising and publicising an event only to find you’re asked to leave after 10 minutes.

On the day - check everyone has your contact details. Pack some coloured marker pens - biros - paper - blunt ended scissors - sticky tape - double sided tape. Balloons for handing out (write Buy Nothing day on them). Make sure you have plenty of leaflets. Take a notepad to get contact details of fellow BNDers. Take lots of pictures with a digital camera or mobile and send them to us. Check the weather and dress for it. Remember to pack something to eat and drink.

The public generally love the idea of Buy Nothing Day and many of the events tried over previous years have been well received. Your event should be fun and engaging. Humour works in a big way - the sillier the better. Why not organise a ZOMBI£ MOB! In our absurd consumer society we are becoming zoned out zombies, shuffling from shop to shop chanting BUY, BUY - BRANDS, BRANDS!

Some will argue that this method of campaigning won’t capture the public’s attention and we’re laughing in the face of the more important issues. However, we’re culture jamming - if people laugh at the ingenuity and genius of Buy Nothing Day then we’ve got their attention - we’re opening the door to the important issues.

… And don’t forget!
Your event shouldn’t hinder people going about their daily business - blockading doors or silly stunts don’t work - many people don’t have a choice about participating in a consumer society. Ultimately, shoppers won’t listen if you treat them like the enemy.
Below are some ideas, which have worked in the past…

Buy Nothing Day Santa Parade Organisation Guide

You need:
Santa Suits, beards etc (ours were £4 each)
Placards (waterproofed, just in case!)
Leaflets explaining what it’s all about (we distributed 500 to enthusiastic shoppers in about 25 minutes!)
Some friends (or not, even a lone santa with a placard attracts attention)

Some ideas of things to do on the day:
Stand in a bus queue - seven Santa’s waiting for the bus certainly attracts attention. Surround friendly shoppers in a circle of Santa’s - works well with young children! Have a Santa Conga - walking in a line is much more eye catching than a huddle. Dance, smile, be happy, go “ho ho ho”!

Advice: Try get some press - you’ll look excellent. Local TV and papers may be interested. Local radio also has a lot of time to fill. Go for a real culture jamming approach - make people think by being wierd and interesting. Keep fluffy, and make people want to join in.

Be nice to shoppers, after all, you shop too.

Don’t bother with private land - it would be great to wander through a shopping centre, but being turfed out by security could be bad for Santa’s fun image - and that means shoppers don’t want to listen to the BND message.

Report from a previous parade: A Santa Parade, exorting people to “Buy More, Be Happy” and “Work! Spend! Don’t think!” took to the streets today in Birmingham to celebrate “Buy Nothing Day”.

Visiting the new “Bullring” shopping centre, and the packed pedestrianised shopping streets of Brum, the parade got an excellent response from the public. “Buy Nothing Day, that’s a good idea” and “Well done Santa!” were just two of the positive comments we received from passers by.

Seven Santa’s held placards, including “Money CAN buy you love” and “If it’s Branded, then it must be good”. Parodies of commercial slogans included: “Just Buy it” and “What do you want to buy today?”

Sports engaged in included: Santa’s queueing for the bus; surrounding shoppers in a circle of Santa’s; a Santa Conga; dancing to a busking steel band; standing under the “Happy Christmas Birmingham” lights. We also posed for photos with lots of tourists!

The one downside? People were so interested that our 1000+ leaflets ran out very quickly! (and we only gave them out to those who were interested, unlike the club-flyer people) Certainly one to repeat.

Shopping free zone
Mark out a public area and fill it with people playing games, listening to music and chilling out on sofas or chairs (inflatable furniture is good). Hand out balloons with Buy Nothing Day written on them to the bemused onlookers.

Consumer monster
Join the Consumer Monster Challenge - take to the streets with a video camera and your own www.consumermonster.com activist puppet to spread consumer awareness. Learn how to make your own puppet on the site - Get sewing!

The ZOMBI£ $HOPP£R$ are coming!
Organise a group to dress up as zoned out zombies, shuffling from shop to shop chanting BUY, BUY - BRANDS, BRANDS! Stalk the high street.

Swap shop
Fairly simple idea. Set up a table and ask people to do swaps. Just for fun - leave a set of bugus Porsche keys and see if anyone notices?

Temper Tantrum
Re-live those childhood tantrum moments - except this time you’re all grown up and should know better. Sit on the floor in any shop with a friend and chuck a mental. Shout things like ‘I don’t want anything anymore!’ or ‘You’ve got more shopping than me - that’s not fair you pig!’, anything really - just be a BIG kid.

Banner drop
Slightly more adventurous - you’ll need a big sheet. Paint on a BND slogan like ‘The more you consume the less you live!’ and see if you can get it put up somewhere in your local shopping centre.

Conga time!
Top off BND with a classic conga. Chant, sing songs and get everyone to join in. It’s a great way to end Buy Nothing Day!
DO NOT FLY POSTER!
Putting an official or un-official BND Poster or Leaflet over a paid for advertisement / billboard is illegal and will get you into trouble.

HAVE FUN and HAPPY BUY NOTHING DAY…

What happens when an anarchist musician and his partner swap their lives and lifestyles for that of a rich polo club owner and property developer?

The following link takes you to a site that has put our Anti-War/Pro-War/Anarchist/Monarchist Life-Swap Prog. up on it.

ITV have banned it but that hasn't stopped it going out on the web.... as one might expect in an age where the means of production are gradually entering the public domain.

Click on the link once seeing as double clicking seems to call up a screen that has audio but not visual. Broadband may well be necessary since it is a site with live streaming. Please read the background below before clicking on it as we think it provides an important explanation of how we feel about it. http://www.brightcove.com/title.jsp?title=686989691&channel=219646953

When we were asked to participate in a Life-Swap commissioned by Granada TV & intended for release on prime-time ITV we told the researchers to look for someone else. We were then told that we were lucky to have been picked & that there are waiting lists involving thousands of people who wanted to appear on reality TV.

We still rejected the idea unless they could assure us of certain conditions. These were that we wanted to be swapped with the richest, most corrupt family that they could find. We said that it would merely feed the bigotries of the bourgeoisie if, once again, two sets of working class families were set at each other's throats. We told them that we firmly believe that the whole reality TV fad is merely an attempt to make the middle classes feel comfortable about their bankrupt lives by exaggerating the flaws of working class people.

Strangely the researchers said that they would give it a shot. We said that they had better consider it seriously because if we found that they had paired us up with another low paid or unemployed family we would walk. Since we weren't to know who we were being swapped with until the actual moment itself it didn't seem in Granada's interest to squander its resources on a project that we were obviously going to walk out on at the critical moment. Amazingly we were subjected to the very experience we had asked for.

Contrary to the misleading narration in the final edit our opposites are not "self-made" but were born into extreme prosperity & land-ownership. They also have ties with the Royal Family as bastions of the Polo & Fox Hunting set. Our next issue was the possibility of being made to look either immoral or ridiculous.... an easy thing for the media to contrive with careful editing. We sought council among many of our peers & finally agreed that if our conversation was disciplined & focused around two main issues we would at least draw the public's attention to important themes rather than their viewing-time being taken up with petty domestic arguments.

These themes were obviously the environment & the Iraq War. It quickly transpired that the director seemed more sympathetic towards our view-point than that of the establishment. This, however did not stop him from playing down our attributes & exaggerating the attributes of our "adversaries". He was quite candid in admitting this. His excuse was that he had bugger all chance of getting the final edit on TV if it looked weighted in our favour. Since it appears to have been "D-Noticed" he has since decided to furnish us with a copy as a "booby-prize".

We have mixed feelings about his final edit. On the one hand it does draw attention to the Iraq War in a way not yet seen on British television. Here we had the two most extreme views on British imperialism going head to head. On the other hand the environment was barely touched on & certain untruths were perpetuated in order for our friends to be made to appear slacker than they are & our family, itself to be made to appear more duplicitous than they are. Our friends punctuality is brought into question {when, in fact it was the punctuality of Granada's production crew which was at fault} & we were asked to breach an agreement by the director in order to make sure our friends were not in any danger which was secretly filmed & then dressed up as a decision we had made ourselves.

All will become clear when you watch the final edit. We did consider lifting the original & quite biased narration & inserting our own biased narration but, what the hell, this is as much of a comment on the media as it is on the differences between radicals & the establishment.

One thing that strikes us as an important lesson in all of this is the fact that the director had to cull ninety hours of footage into a 46 minute, sensationalist blast worthy of little more than tabloid attention. Although this is better than nothing we have found this medium for analysing our two families as deeply deficient. We have thus written a book entitled "The Life-Swap They Wouldn't Show" which we believe addresses this important experience more thoroughly. It seems that mainstream publishers are unwilling to even put that out so it is available on our web-site www.highpanch.org.uk Granada TV did attempt to furnish us with extra footage from the 89 hours 14 minutes that are not available.

We have been told, however, that this is now the property of ITV PLC & they will not allow it to be seen. It all reminds me of what happens at the very end of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" where the Ark of the Covenant is boxed up & filed away from public view. To this day we have no idea whether all of this is a product of a "Conspiracy" or a "Cock-up" since even this 46 minute edit really should be shown on mainstream TV at this point in history.
Love Craig & Kiran xxx

Copyright Term Directive - what is a fair copyright term for musicians?

I thought you would like to see the video message to the Prime Minister recorded by some of your performer colleagues. You can view it here http://www.ppluk.com/fairplay and, if you feel inspired, you can even record your own video message and send it in. The video message was delivered this morning to the Prime Minister, urging him to support musicians and our industry by backing the Copyright Term Directive.

His Minister, John Denham, is still refusing to support us and he has been attempting to block this Directive in discussions in the European Council of Ministers. A number of musicians have now written to their local MPand we are noticing that this is increasing the pressure on the Government to review their position. I would like to repeat my thanks to you for taking the trouble to take this up with your MP. If you have not yet done this, there is still time. You can find your MPs at www.locata.co.uk/commons. Please send them the link to the video.

The arguments remain the same. It is only fair that performers should have the same copyright term as other artists, such as composers, lyricists, photographers, authors and graphic artists. They get life plus 70. We are limited to 50 years from the release of the recording.

The USA has increased copyright term for performers and producers to 95 years. The European Commission has drafted the Copyright Term Directive to take our copyright term up to 95 years. The French and German governments are supporting this. In the UK, the opposition parties, the Culture Select Committee and numerous backbench MPs support this proposal. But our own Government continues to refuse to back this Directive.

The UK Government needs to hear that we are not giving up on this. Musicians deserve a fair copyright term.

It retains the edgy, punk rock ideals found in previous incarnations such as his band redshift. This record though, founded a new genre combining earthy melodies and ethereal shape shifting... A must have for anyone with a taste for the unusual.. Outsider music at its best!

HALOES & SUNDOGS (2006)
Toby`s first studio EP sees a more refined take on the musical side, but still manages to convey the stark beauty, and sometimes disturbing harshness which Toby is renowned for. This record sets the scene for that which is yet to come... Inspirational music that will take the listener on journeys never before imagined!

PRESSED FLOWERS (2008)
Finally Released! This is Toby Wainwright Johns` finest hour to date! A mini album brimming with all of the intensity and emotion expected from Toby. This record also incorporates new, challenging dynamics and explores territories that have been left unopened previously.. A true Pandora`s box that will delve into the furthest reaches of the psyche.. Light and dark, Tragedy and comedy and beyond! Melodies that weave in and out of the consciousness, embedding themselves deep within your soul! This is definitely not new age. This is age old and primitive. Strange yet familiar... The theatre, the circus, within your own mind.. Incomparable!
